Gazebo Installation

Common Characteristics of Wooden and Cedar Gazebo Kits

By Premier Assembly

Natural grain, knots, checking, and colour variation are normal in wood and cedar kits. Here's what to expect before flagging something as defective.

Wooden and cedar gazebos are popular for a reason — they look natural and age beautifully in a backyard. But wood is a natural material, and the characteristics that come with it are normal, not flaws.

Here's what to expect from a real wooden kit so you know what's typical and what may actually need attention.

Natural grain and colour

Every piece of wood has its own grain, and colour varies from piece to piece. Cedar in particular shows a range of tones, from warm amber to lighter straw. Variation across the structure is normal and part of the look.

Knots

Knots are part of solid wood. They appear in many cedar and wooden components and are expected, not a defect.

Checking and small cracks

Checking — those short surface cracks that run along the grain — is common as wood responds to humidity. Small splits and surface checks are normal and usually don't affect the structure's integrity.

Bowing and warping

Longer pieces can bow or warp slightly, especially before assembly. Minor bowing is often pulled straight as the structure is assembled and fastened together. Pieces that are badly warped may need to be replaced.

Colour and stain variation

If your kit is stained or sealed, you may see unevenness in tone, especially between pieces from different lots. That's typical — wood absorbs finish unevenly.

Chipping around edges and components

Because wood is machined into components, small chips around holes, notches, and cut edges can happen during manufacturing and handling. Minor chipping is common.

Manufacturer-supplied condition

Your kit arrives in the condition the manufacturer shipped it. The pieces haven't been altered — they're sorted and assembled as provided.

Care during assembly

Wooden components are handled carefully: not dragging boards across the ground, not over-tightening intodados, and keeping hardware aligned so the wood isn't split.

When something may need replacing

Cosmetic variation is expected. But if a component is so warped, split, or damaged that it can't be assembled as designed, that piece may need replacement — and replacements usually come from the manufacturer or retailer.

FAQ

Are knots and grain variation defects?
No. They're normal characteristics of solid wood and cedar and are expected in these kits.
What is checking?
Checking refers to short surface cracks along the grain as wood responds to humidity. Small checks are normal and usually don't affect the structure.
What if a board is badly warped?
Minor bowing often pulls straight during assembly. If a piece is so warped it can't be assembled as designed, that piece may need replacement from the manufacturer or retailer.
Why does the stain look uneven?
Wood absorbs finish unevenly, and pieces may come from different lots. Tone variation is typical, not a defect.
