I Bought a Gazebo — What Do I Need to Do Before Installation?

By Premier Assembly · 2026-09-29

Buying the gazebo is the first step, not the last. Here's what to confirm before an installer arrives — delivery, the product check, the site, the surface, access, photos and scope.

I Bought a Gazebo — What Do I Need to Do Before Installation?

Quick Answer

Buying the gazebo is the first step, not the last. Before an installer arrives, you generally want to have confirmed five things: the exact product (brand, model and size), that delivery has happened (or is scheduled), that the product and packaging have been checked, that the installation area is clear and the surface is suitable, and that the installer has the information and photos needed to quote and prepare.

None of this requires you to build anything. It's about making sure the installer arrives to a site and a product that are ready, so the build can happen in one visit.

Before You Book Installation

Before asking for a quote, gather the following. Each item changes whether the job is feasible and what it costs.

  • Brand and model — determines the assembly steps, hardware and manual.
  • Size — drives crew size, working room and time.
  • Product manual — the manufacturer's instructions control the build. If you don't have it, look it up; many manufacturers publish model-specific manuals.
  • Installation location — where on the property the gazebo will sit.
  • Surface type — concrete, pavers/interlock, wood deck, composite deck, or another prepared surface.
  • Approximate access route — how components and people get from the curb or driveway to the backyard.
  • Photos of the installation area — the surface and footprint.
  • Photos of the wider yard and access — gates, side yards, stairs.
  • Product and package photos — if the gazebo has already been delivered.

Check Your Gazebo Product Information

Installers assemble to the manufacturer's instructions, so the exact product matters. Gazebos that look similar can differ substantially in assembled dimensions, packaged size, weight, hardware and anchoring requirements. Don't assume a "12x14 gazebo" from one brand builds the same as a 12x14 from another.

Have ready:

  • Brand and model name or number
  • Assembled dimensions
  • Packaged dimensions and number of boxes (useful for access planning)
  • Product weight (relevant for handling and surface suitability)
  • The manufacturer's installation requirements
  • Anchoring requirements, and whether anchoring hardware is included with the kit — some kits do not include it
  • The manufacturer's instruction manual

Where requirements vary by product — and they usually do — the product's own manual controls. Yardistry, for example, publishes model-specific instruction manuals for its ready-to-assemble kits, so the manual for your exact model is the reference, not a generic gazebo guide.

Check the Delivery

When the gazebo arrives, inspect it before the installer is scheduled:

  • Look over the packaging for obvious damage.
  • Photograph any damaged packaging.
  • If you can see damaged components, photograph those too.
  • Keep the paperwork, order number and delivery notes.
  • Don't throw away packaging immediately — it protects parts and helps identify items.
  • Try to identify missing or damaged parts before installation day.

Delivery arrangements differ between retailers. Some deliver to the curb; some offer threshold or backyard-threshold delivery; some are delivery-only and leave assembly to you. Costco's Yardistry listings, for example, are delivery-only — installation is not included — so don't assume the gazebo will be placed in the exact installation spot, or that anyone will assemble it as part of delivery. Home Depot Canada's gazebo installation service notes that the gazebo is delivered curbside. Understand your retailer's delivery scope before installation day so you know where the boxes will actually land and what you're responsible for.

Make Sure the Installation Area Is Ready

This is the part most likely to delay a build. An installer shouldn't be expected to prepare an unsuitable site as part of ordinary assembly.

Before installation day:

  • Clear the installation area — remove furniture, planters, toys and anything in the footprint.
  • Provide access to the work area for the crew and the components.
  • Make sure the surface is ready and level (more on surfaces below).
  • Consider overhead clearance — branches, eaves, clotheslines, overhead wires.
  • Consider nearby fences, walls, trees and structures that could interfere with panels or beams.
  • Make sure there's working space around the structure, not just the footprint.
  • Identify anything that could interfere with assembly and tell the installer in advance.

Required working space can vary by product. Check the installation manual and allow enough room for the assembly process rather than assuming a fixed clearance. We don't quote a universal clearance number because one doesn't apply across products.

What Surfaces Can a Gazebo Be Installed On?

It depends on the gazebo and the existing surface. The useful questions are:

  • Is the surface suitable for the product?
  • Is it level?
  • Is it structurally appropriate for how the gazebo is anchored?
  • Can the product be anchored according to its requirements?
  • Are there surface-specific limitations — a deck's framing, paver type, a cracked slab?

Common surfaces Premier Assembly has installed gazebos on include concrete, pavers/interlock, and composite and wood decks. For example, we've installed a Hampton Bay Winfield 10x12 gazebo on concrete in Brampton, Yardistry 12x14 gazebos on pavers/interlock in Whitby, Kitchener and Barrie, and a Yardistry Meridian 12x16 on a composite deck in Hamilton. We haven't installed every gazebo on every surface — that's why we review your photos and the product's requirements before confirming.

For a deeper look at each surface, see our existing guides:

Check Access Before Installation

Access is the practical detail generic guides overlook, and it's the one most likely to make a job harder than expected. The gazebo may arrive in multiple boxes, and the assembly process needs room to work.

Think about:

  • Side gates and their width
  • Narrow passages between houses
  • Stairs and steps
  • Fences and retaining walls
  • Landscaping, garden beds and trees
  • Distance from the driveway or garage to the backyard
  • Overhead obstacles — eaves, branches, wires

We don't quote a minimum access dimension because products and sites vary. If access is uncertain, send photos of the route from where the boxes will be dropped to the install location — that tells us more than a number.

Do You Need to Prepare the Base?

There's a difference between assembling a gazebo and preparing a base. Assembling means sorting components and building the structure to the manufacturer's instructions. Preparing a base means building or leveling the surface the gazebo sits on — excavation, concrete, gravel, a wood platform, or grading. Those are different jobs.

Premier Assembly assembles and anchors the gazebo to your existing surface within the agreed scope. We don't build foundations, pour concrete, level an unsuitable base, or do structural site preparation as part of ordinary assembly. If the surface isn't ready, the build can't proceed as planned.

This matches how other assembly services describe their scope. Home Depot Canada's gazebo installation service, for example, states it covers unpacking and assembly and that no work will be done to build or level a base. Where your product needs a specific base, follow the manufacturer's instructions and have that base ready before installation.

Permits and building codes vary by municipality and by the structure. We don't give a blanket answer. If you're unsure whether your project needs a permit, check with your municipality before scheduling.

What If the Gazebo Has Missing or Damaged Parts?

If parts are missing or damaged, don't assume the installer can finish the whole job. Replacement parts usually come from the retailer or manufacturer, not the installer.

Recommended steps:

  1. Photograph the issue.
  2. Identify the part from the manual's parts list.
  3. Contact the retailer or manufacturer if a replacement is needed.
  4. Keep the packaging and paperwork.
  5. Tell us before the appointment if you already know about an issue.

We can often work around a non-critical missing piece, but a structural part can pause the build until a replacement arrives. A return trip may involve additional charges depending on the circumstances and the agreed scope. For more detail, see What Happens If Your Gazebo Kit Has Missing or Damaged Parts?. We don't promise specific replacement or warranty outcomes — those are set by the manufacturer or retailer.

What Photos Should I Send the Installer?

Good photos let us quote accurately and plan the build. Send:

  1. The entire installation area — the full footprint.
  2. A close view of the surface — concrete, pavers, deck boards.
  3. A wider view of the backyard — for context.
  4. The access route — from the drop point to the install location.
  5. Obstacles around the area — fences, walls, stairs, overhead branches.
  6. The product box or model label — if already delivered.

Each photo answers a question: can we get there, can we work there, and is the surface suitable? Send them through our quote page — we don't use a separate form for this.

What Information Should I Give Premier Assembly?

To quote your project, we need:

  • Name and city
  • Product type (gazebo)
  • Brand
  • Model
  • Size
  • Surface
  • Installation location
  • Access information
  • Photos
  • Any known issues with delivery or the product

This matches our standard quote form — no extra required fields. See What Information Do We Need for an Installation Quote? for more.

What Happens on Installation Day?

A typical flow, though the exact sequence depends on the product:

  1. Confirm the product and installation area.
  2. Review the site and access.
  3. Organize components.
  4. Assemble according to the product's instructions.
  5. Complete required fastening and anchoring within the agreed scope.
  6. Inspect the completed assembly.
  7. Clean up the work area within the agreed scope.
  8. Walk through the finished build with you.

We don't promise a specific number of hours. Duration depends on the product, size, surface, access and crew. Your quote includes an expected duration for your specific project.

What Is Usually Not Part of Basic Assembly?

Depending on the quoted scope, basic assembly may not include:

  • Excavation
  • Building a new foundation or base
  • Major site preparation
  • Removal or disposal of an existing structure
  • Electrical work
  • Unrelated landscaping
  • Correcting an unsuitable surface
  • Structural modifications to the property

This reflects our actual service scope. If you need something outside ordinary assembly, tell us when you request a quote so it can be reviewed and included where possible.

FAQ

I bought a gazebo from Costco. Can Premier Assembly install it?
Often, yes, where the product is within our scope. Costco's Yardistry listings are delivery-only — installation isn't included — so you'd arrange assembly separately. Send the brand, model, size, surface and photos and we'll confirm whether we can take it on. We're independent and not affiliated with Costco or Yardistry.
I bought my gazebo from Home Depot. Can someone else install it?
Yes. You're free to use an independent installer. Home Depot's own gazebo installation service is separate from ours, and we're not affiliated with Home Depot. Send the product details and photos and we'll review whether it's within our scope.
Can you install a gazebo I purchased from another retailer?
Yes, where the product is within our scope. We're an independent installer and aren't affiliated with any retailer or manufacturer. Brand and retailer names are for identification only.
Does the gazebo need to be delivered before installation?
It needs to be on site and checked before we build. Confirm your retailer's delivery scope — some deliver curbside only, and some are delivery-only with no assembly. We install a product that's already delivered and inspected.
Can a gazebo be installed on a deck?
Often, yes — wood or composite — where the deck is structurally suitable and level and the product's mounting requirements are met. We don't engineer or certify deck load capacity. Our deck installation guide covers the considerations in more detail.
Can a gazebo be installed on composite decking?
Often, yes, where the deck is suitable and level. Premier Assembly has installed a gazebo on a composite deck — a Yardistry Meridian 12x16 in Hamilton. The product's requirements control whether it's suitable for a given deck.
Can a gazebo be installed on interlock?
Often, yes, where the surface is level. Premier Assembly has installed gazebos on pavers and interlock, including Yardistry 12x14 installations in Whitby, Kitchener and Barrie. Our pavers and interlock guide covers the considerations in more detail.
Does the surface need to be level?
Yes — a level surface matters for panel fit, door alignment and assembly accuracy. If the surface isn't level, the build may not proceed as planned. Have a suitable, level surface ready before installation.
Do I need to build a base first?
It depends on the product and your site. We don't build bases or level unsuitable surfaces as part of ordinary assembly. Follow the manufacturer's requirements and have a suitable base ready before installation.
What if my gazebo arrives damaged?
Photograph the damage, identify the affected part from the manual, and contact the retailer or manufacturer about a replacement. Tell us before the appointment so we can plan. We don't promise specific warranty outcomes — those are set by the manufacturer or retailer.
What if parts are missing?
Photograph and identify the missing part from the manual's parts list, contact the retailer or manufacturer, and tell us before the appointment. Non-critical parts may let the build continue; structural parts may pause it. Our missing and damaged parts guide covers the process.
Do I need a permit?
Permit requirements vary by municipality and by the structure. We don't give a blanket answer. If you're unsure whether your project needs a permit, check with your municipality before scheduling.
How do I know if there is enough access to my backyard?
Send photos of the route from where the boxes will be dropped to the install location — gates, side yards, stairs, fences. We don't quote a universal minimum dimension because products and sites vary.
What photos should I send for a quote?
The full installation area, a close view of the surface, a wider backyard view, the access route, obstacles around the area, and the product box or model label if it's been delivered. Send them through our quote page.
How long does gazebo installation take?
It depends on size, brand, material, surface, access and crew. We don't promise a specific number of hours. Your quote includes an expected duration for your specific project.
